Why do so many Sea Lions get cancer? The answer could unlock how to prevent cancer in everyone.

Posted by Anna Sweeney | , United States

Besides the Tasmanian Devil, Sea Lions have one of the highest rates of cancer of all mammals. The fur seals don't show any instances of cancer. Their habitat is further out in the ocean..
Why Sea Lions, but not fur seals? Sea Lions are very social animals that hang out right on and along our California coast line. What is happening along our coast line that creates cancer in these animals.
Run-off, stress, changing environment, food source, etc.... If we find out how to prevent it in Sea Lions we can potentially use those preventative measures for our human environments....The marine mammals are the canaries in the coal mine....we just need to put the puzzle together......
All the best,
Anna
