Reduce collisions betweens whales and ships
Posted by Sarah Hemmer | California, United States
Many great whales are far fewer than they once were. Too many such whales are killed in collisions with ships every year. It is unacceptable to see these magnificent animals lost this way. Surely there must be some technology or some new program that can be invented to help stop whales from being hit by these boats.
For Sarrah; From “Blue Whales and Blue Skies” reply with additions; “Good writing Sean, and accurate to your points. Problem is no one in the masses “cares” or even understands the importance, so education is critical and; yes, couldn’t agree more – “new” technology is critical as the old is “old” and “worn out” and, doesn’t provide for a critical, higher resolution knowledge base, to grow research capabilities and thus, a better knowledge base to ultimately create action resulting in “improvements”. There is an answer to most of what you are writing about, but unfortunately the funding base does not support the creation of such technologies, as it is not part of the “machine” (government, government entities, Universities, “paper smarts”, etc.) so their process is very slow, unfortunately. But, there is something going on though, FAR beyond what any other entities in the world are doing (but they are all very interested in getting their hands on it though) New technology with known applied physics and electronics that go far beyond, anything used by any of them, today. These are the guys: http://www.whaleresearchinstitute.org Feel free to share the site address. PS: They have their own research vessel and all of the equipment (but no support to operate on a greater basis) That’s the problem today. Everyone with “money” supports entities with “money” But the fact is, and, also in this case, the entities with the “money” DON’T have the “research instruments” OR the “ability to engineer/create” that the entities that DON’T have the “money” . . . . . . have. It’s called, decades of experience, a wealth of knowledge, deductive reasoning and downright high IQ coupled with creative thought AND a LOT of failure suffered, to be able to eventually, succeed. These are the people, that never go home at night . . . . . .
ADDED: Sean, i forgot. Look at the “Golden Gate Whale Guard” It will work in The Santa Barbara Channel as well as, basically, anywhere.
THIS SOUNDS LIKE GREAT IDEA BUT HOW CAN U AVOID A WHALE IF THERE IS NON SCANNER TYPE SIGNAL SENSOR ABOARD OLD BOATS NEW ONES HAVE THEM BUT DUE TO SOME BOATERS THEY CANT AFFORD NEW EQUIPMENT I LIVE ON THE ISLANDS OF THE BAY I SEE SHIPS AND BOATS ALL DAY START POSTING WHALE SWIM BY SIGNS?WARNINGS WHALE CROSSING BY WATER SIGNS NEAR DOCKS? KILLER WHALES AND SEALS AND OTTERS ARE IN OUR CALFORNIA OCEANS N AND SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
You have a FAR better chance of winning the POWERBALL LOTTERY the hitting a Killer Whale. NEW boats DO NOT have the devices you mention, actually VERY few have Forward Looking SONAR that shows what is ahead of the vessel.
And yes thats EXTREMELY expensive stuff to buy/have aboard.
Can’t tel if you are serious or just DON’T want to GET IT !!! It’s called BE WARE, Watch Out, Report sighting (if you know how) Just be a part of it instead of BUCK IT. No reason to strike a whale. Except at nigh, going to fast.
If you can’t figure it out, you should not be boating. i’s just NOT that tough.
