Poaching threatens South Africa’s perlemoen (abalone) populations
Posted by Melissa Schmitt | KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
Perlemoen (abalone) poaching has been a major issue in South Africa and is ultimately threatening certain abalone populations. Many poached abalone are exported overseas, where buyers either do not realize, or do not care, about the origin of the catch. Is there a way to bring this issue to the attention of international buyers to reduce the demand for poached abalone?
