Filling the gap – understanding catch in unreported fisheries

Posted by Michel Kaiser | Anglesey, United Kingdom

The majority of world's fishing vessels (>90%) are under 10 m in length. Often these activities overlap with conservation hotspots. Getting data for these fisheries is important, but time-consuming and mostly not done. This can be done easily using off the shelf video camera technology, laser systems and portable rechargeable batteries. The hardware is TRL5 - but we need to automate analysis of species/size etc to provide potentially global coverage of small-scale fisheries.
