Clear plastic water bottle caps disappear in the sand

Posted by Nathan Goodman | Florida, United States

On the Florida panhandle, I collect trash each day I am on vacation. What I was most surprised about, was what I found the morning after a night of high winds. The winds blew the thick white sands flat, and exposed in the sand were hundreds of bottle caps from plastic water bottles. I collected 95 caps in one hour. The caps are almost invisible against the sand and thus people loose them very easily. I suggest we ban plastic water bottles on beaches, convince water bottle manufacturers to use colored plastic in their bottles, and create a machine that can rake the sand to pull out the bottle caps already hidden in the sand.
