Can we improve the traceability of aquarium fish coming from Costa Rica?

Posted by Noelia Solano | Puntarenas, Costa Rica

The sale of fish to aquarium enthusiasts is an important economic activity for rural coastal communities here in Costa Rica and elsewhere in the world. I’m bothered by the fact that there is almost no traceability in this aquarium fish trade. I know fishermen here that use sustainable practices to catch only common fish by hand. They have to compete on the international market with people in other places that sometimes use hazardous chemicals to stun and catch reef fish and that target rare at-risk species. I don’t think this is fair. Can we come up with a way to certify “green” aquarium fish? And can these labels go all the way through the trade chain so families buying fish know whether they are being responsible or not? I think if we come up with a solution it would be good for both fishermen and for fish.
