Build a shark alert network for beachgoers

Posted by Taylor Holve | California, United States

I love taking my kids to the beach and it is their favorite thing to do on a sunny afternoon. But I can't stop worrying about sharks when they are out there in the water. I know that in 2015 there was a record number of shark attacks in California. I realize the odds of a shark attack are extremely low, but that doesn’t always stop me from worrying. I like the idea of sharks coming back in our ocean because I know how important they are to ocean health. I just wish there was some harmless invention that science could come up with that could detect when big sharks are near a swimming area or some tool that could at least give me information on what my odds are in any given month and place of having an unwanted shark encounter. I rely on my phone to get data on so many other facets of my life – couldn’t there be a way to get some good information on local shark safety?
