Base of Near Shore Food Pyramid Missing

Posted by Gregg Young | California, United States

The attached slide show, while not primarily on this subject, explains the problem. We have cut off the supply of nutrients (especially calcium)to our estuaries and the Pacific Ocean through dams (blockage) and protection from fires (production of soluble nutrients) in our forestlands and chaparral. This makes the base of the food pyramid (which is minerals) a limiting factor, rather than a major factor in the fertility and production of our near shore areas. http://www.pottervalleytribe.com/files/-%20SOILS,%20CLIMATE%20AND%20NATIVE%20AMERICAN%20CULTURE%202014.pdf
